Anemic, always ready to bite - and incredibly sexy. Robert Pattinson
(23) is currently England's hottest Hollywood export. With only one
role, lovestruck vampire Edward, Pattinson advanced to be a worldwide
heartthrob.
An end to the hype? Not in sight. On the contrary: The third part of
the Twilight-Saga, "Eclipse", will stir pubertal fan hormones even
more.
Thankfully, the Londoner has done some other movies in between. One of
them is the romantic drama "Remember Me". Robert is playing messed up
teenager Tyler, whose soul life has been suffering since the divorce of
his parents.
When Tyler falls in love with cool Ally (Emilie de Ravin from "Lost"),
he is enjoying life again. Even when Allys Cop-Daddy opposes him.
MSN: Tyler Hawkins is not only not dead. He is completely different
from Edward Cullen...
RP: Somehow I seem to be only playing freaks, fantasy figures or guys
in costume movies. Tyler was finally just a normal man, not too plain
or simple, but with a multi-faceted personality. That was the main
reason why I wanted to play him. Ultimately, it was easier to play
him. I could finally follow my instincts and improvise. First, I
wanted to orientate the character on my own character. But that was
just too complicated. If I play a vampire like Edward Cullen, I can´t
really improvise.
MSN: Have you ever been as aggressive as Tyler?
RP: Yes, I still am! Seriously: I wasn´t a rebellious kid. Maybe
that´s why you feel some aimless anger later in life.
MSN: And then you are demolishing hotel rooms?
RP: I relax while I´m working. Believe me, I can play somebody
agressive all day and can go to bed really satisfied and relaxed in
the evening. I´m always pretty happy when I can concentrate on a
project, a movie. When I´m not working, that´s a stressful time for
me. Besides I have just been to LA for a month, have been writing
songs and recording some. This is even more relaxing.
MSN: You seem to be very modest, humble and down to earth. How is
that possible if dozens of screaming girls want to grab you wherever
you go?
RP: You fall into a state of shock, therefore the containment
(laughs). I think it´s normal just to stay the way you are. The hype
hits you completely unprepared. Had I planned to be a teenie idol,
maybe I would think differently about it. But it was a coincidence,
so I´m not aiming at anything. But I do believe that you have to earn
your merits.
MSN: Do you see yourself as a hostage to your success? Would you like
to go back to normal?
RP: No. The thought would make me crazy. The only stupid thing about
my situation is that I can´t observe other people anymore without
anybody noticing it. But studying human behavior is one of the basics
of my job. As an actor you have to observe exactly how people behave
in certain situations. While filming "Remember Me" there were scenes
where I just had to walk along the street thinking about nothing.
Sounds easy? Just try thinking about nothing when there are 50 people
just 100 feet away taking pictures of you while you walk along the
street!
MSN: Since "Twilight", has it been easier or more difficult to meet woman?
RP: Before "Twilight", nobody had ever approached me. So if this is
happening now, I suspect that maybe she doesn´t want to be only
"nice". That´s strange.
MSN: Let´s pretend you´re on a first date. What would you say?
RP: Nothing at all. I´ll wait until the lady says something. You have
to listen first and try to figure out what the other one wants to hear
before you open your mouth.
