Johnny Depp to eclipse Robert Pattinson as world’s most popular vampire?

Will Johnny Depp eclipse Robert Pattinson as the world’s most popular vampire? Johnny Depp will be starring in a film version of “Dark Shadows,” to begin filming in February 2011, a movie based on the 1960s television version of the same name. Robert Pattinson’s famous portrayal of Twilight’s Edward Cullen and the rest of his angsty teen vampire troop will begin filming the last two movies in the series in Baton Rouge next week.

Johnny Depp, arguably the world’s sexiest man, will be teaming up with long time collaborator Tim Burton for the new film. He will play 175-year old Barnabus Collins, a vampire that has been confined in a coffin since 1795. Now that he’s been released he must adapt to the modern world. As Hollywood.com puts it, “basically like Encinco Man meets Twilight.”

While there have been other beautiful, breathtaking men that have played vampires in the past, including Brad Pitt, Antonio Banderas and Tom Cruise in “Interview with the Vampire,” and James Marsters from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” the competition between the two reigning “it” men may be fierce at the box office. No word yet when “Dark Shadows” will hit theaters.

Robert Pattinson’s sullen yet disarmingly beguiling portrayal of Edward Cullen in the Twilight franchise has entranced women of all ages the world over. Twilight’s extreme success has seen numerous vampire movies and television series come forth in recent years, including HBO’s popular “True Blood.”
